What do hockey, beer, redheads and a beloved English bulldog have in common? They all help tell the comedic tale of Mike “Army” Armstrong in the upcoming feature film “Army & Coop.” The film, shot entirely in Colorado, was written and directed by Dennis Hefter and produced by his company No Clue Entertainment. The story follows Armstrong, a recently suspended pro hockey player now working at a small sports bar, who is at a crossroads with both his career and his personal life. Struggling to regain his former glory days and win back the affection of his ex-girlfriend Jen. Aided by the help of his best friend, Scott, as well as an all-star cast of colorful characters, Armstrong works to ultimately overcome his greatest adversary… himself.
The film’s director, Dennis Hefter, is a resident of Boulder, who assembled a team of Colorado based actors and crew to put his feature length comedy into production. The film was also produced in association with local production company Tri-Seven Pictures with principal photography beginning in November of 2016 and concluded in December. The film marks Hefter’s writing and directing debut and stars many recognizable Colorado talent including Heath Heine, Cali June, Ben Hilzer, Walter Anaruk, J.T. Richardson, and introduced Armstrong’s four-legged co-star, Moxie.
The film takes place over the course of one day, and was shot primarily at Mudrock’s Tap & Tavern in Louisville, CO. With the help of several local breweries including Boulder Brewing, Avery, Oskar Blues, Lone Tree and Left-Hand Brewing Co. the film was able to fully decorate and stock a realistic bar with signs, beer handles and background apparel in order to portray a blue-collar watering hole. Mudrock’s itself is also featured as the name of the bar used in the film. To round out the production producers recruited a small group of local filmmakers for both on-set and post-production purposes showcasing the variety of talented storytellers working right here in Colorado.
In order to finance the film Hefter and his producers raised money through friends and family for the majority of the production, and finished with a successful Indiegogo Campaign featuring behind the scenes photos and videos, and special rewards for backers including special hockey jerseys, original song downloads and signed posters. The film is currently wrapped up post-production as they look to hold a cast & crew screening as well as several test screenings later this month. According to Hefter he, and his team, are looking into submitting the film to a variety of film festivals and distribution outlets for a 2018 release.
