In this darkly funny drama from Academy Award-winning Irish-British writer-director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), fellow Oscar-holder Frances McDormand stars as Mildred Hayes, the grieving, rage-filled mother of a murder victim. (Roget Ebert reviewer Brian Tallerico calls her performance her best since Fargo.) Months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s brutal case. So Mildred makes a bold move, commissioning three billboards on the roads leading into her town to be emblazoned with a controversial message for William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the revered local chief of police. When his loyal second-in-command, Officer Dixon—an immature mama’s boy with a violent streak as played by Sam Rockwell—gets involved, Mildred’s furious battle for justice becomes all the more complicated.
