In recent years, over 65 million people around the world have fled their homes to escape famine, climate change and war. This epic documentary journey through 23 countries by the internationally renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei gives powerful visual expression to both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.
Weiwei follows a chain of events that stretches across the globe to bear visceral witness to the plight of these migrants in their desperate search for safety, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting allure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. A testament to the unassailable human spirit, Human Flow also poses one of the questions that will define this century: at a time when tolerance, compassion and trust are needed more than ever, can our global society reject fear, isolation and self-interest in favor of openness, freedom and respect for humanity?
